Steps Concludes Pioneering “Community Initiatives” Training in Aleppo to Enhance the Role of Local Organizations in Improving the Syrian Reality

On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation concluded a specialized training titled “Community Initiatives” in Aleppo. The training saw the participation of 16 representatives from various charities, volunteer teams, and active civil society organizations on the ground.

The training spanned three days, totaling 18 training hours, and was delivered by Dr. Abeer Hussein, a researcher in political thought and a lecturer at Aleppo University for liberated areas, who possesses extensive experience in humanitarian work and the protection sector.

Building Capabilities to Foster Initiative and Effective Citizenship

The training aimed to spread awareness of the concept of community initiatives and their role in improving the quality of services provided to citizens, and to stimulate a sense of individual and collective responsibility. This comes amidst the difficult conditions faced by Syrian society after years of war and accumulated economic and social challenges.

The program included an in-depth definition of community initiatives, their types, objectives, success factors, implementation steps, and how to submit proposals to supporting entities. The training also paid special attention to the role of youth and women in launching and implementing these initiatives on the ground.

Interactive Approach and Practical Exercises to Empower Local Actors

The training was characterized by the use of interactive methods, including teamwork and open discussions, in addition to practical application of writing real initiative proposals stemming from the reality of Syrian society. The founder of the “Loyalty to Aleppo Initiative” also participated on the final day to present a successful practical experience and realistic advice to the participants.

Participants noted that this training is the first of its kind in the city and expressed their great satisfaction with the advanced training content and the stimulating organizational environment, commending the trainer, the Steps team, and the training logistics.

A Message of Hope and Determination

The final report emphasized the importance of empowering the local community with knowledge tools and organizational skills, considering community initiatives as one of the most effective means of rapid response to the needs of Syrians. The workshop also showed that there is a real thirst among the local civil society for learning, development, and contributing to making change.
