Idlib | Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation
Ma’arat al-Nu’man, Idlib – May 22, 2025 – As life gradually returns to the city of Ma’arat al-Nu’man after its liberation, the Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation organized a vital awareness seminar titled “The Dangers of Mines and War Remnants” at the Post Office hall in the city. The seminar gathered 50 participants, including returnees, local leaders, teachers, organization representatives, and local councils, aiming to raise awareness about the hidden threats facing residents.
Perilous Return: The Challenge of Mines and War Remnants
With hundreds of families returning to Ma’arat al-Nu’man, residents encountered a painful reality of destroyed homes and mines and explosives planted in lands and houses. This poses a direct threat to their lives and hinders stabilization efforts. This seminar came as an urgent response to raise community awareness and provide returnees with the necessary knowledge for safely dealing with these dangers.
The training, presented by trainer Mohammed Taher Mawwas, included comprehensive modules on the types of mines and war remnants, their humanitarian and economic impacts, mechanisms for identifying and avoiding contaminated areas, and procedures to follow when encountering a suspicious object.
Live Testimony and Painful Sacrifice: Voice from the Field
The seminar witnessed significant interaction and impactful interventions. Women shared painful personal experiences with war remnants, and a Civil Defense trainer provided examples of their efforts in removing explosives. A representative from the Syrian Red Crescent also confirmed their readiness to cooperate in completing the awareness campaign.
In a poignant moment, news arrived of the martyrdom of trainer Ma’moun Al-Omar, who had previously delivered training for the Steps Foundation in Hama, due to a mine explosion while performing his awareness duty. This news led to an early end of the session, and some attendees participated in the funeral rites, honoring his efforts and dedication.
Outcomes and Recommendations for a Safe Environment
The seminar yielded tangible results, as participants became more aware of the dangers of mines and prevention methods, and expressed their readiness to participate in field awareness campaigns and distribute awareness brochures in schools and public places.
“Steps Syria” emphasizes that community safety requires continuous efforts in awareness, prevention, and local and international cooperation, and that sacrifices like that of trainer Ma’moun Al-Omar strengthen our determination to protect returnees and build a safe future for Syria.
