Steps Syria Discusses Sanctions Removal from Syria in Aleppo: Economic and Legal Impact

Aleppo | Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation

On May 15, 2025, the Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation organized a dialogue seminar in Aleppo titled “Removing Sanctions from Syria and Their Economic and Legal Impact.” Sixteen participants, including activists, academics, human rights advocates, and economists, took part. Among them were judges, lawyers (including the Head of the Aleppo Bar Association), members of the Economists Syndicate, and an international economic expert who joined via video conference.

Understanding the Impact and Drawing a Roadmap

The seminar aimed to raise awareness of economic sanctions and analyze the effects of their removal on living conditions and the legal landscape. Key themes addressed included the political history of sanctions, their economic and livelihood impacts (inflation, unemployment, poverty), conditions for their lifting, and strategies to mitigate their effects through economic diversification and local production.

Participants emphasized that the sanctions have profoundly affected society and its vital sectors. Businesspeople pointed out the possibility of boosting the economy through simple administrative steps without waiting for the full removal of sanctions.

Comprehensive Recommendations for a Better Future

The seminar concluded with key recommendations directed at:

  • The Government: Improving transparency, combating corruption, and developing an economic recovery plan.
  • The Academic Community: Conducting analytical studies and policy papers.
  • Civil Society: Launching awareness campaigns and promoting initiatives.
  • The International Community: Separating sanctions from aid and conducting regular reviews.

“Steps Syria” underscores the importance of continuing community dialogues on sensitive economic issues as an entry point for a deeper understanding of the Syrian reality and building a more stable and just economic future.
