Homs | Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation | March 19, 2025
On the evening of March 19, 2025, during a special Ramadan gathering, the Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation hosted a dialogue seminar in Homs titled “Peacebuilding and Transitional Justice in Liberated Syria: Present Challenges and Future Prospects.” The seminar brought together 18 activists, human rights advocates, journalists, and religious figures, with the aim of fostering community dialogue and a culture of tolerance and reconciliation.
Transitional Justice: The Foundation for Peacebuilding
The seminar discussed ways to achieve transitional justice as a pathway to sustainable peace. It emphasized that transitional justice includes holding perpetrators accountable, redressing victims, reforming institutions, and documenting national memory. Challenges to peacebuilding in Homs were identified, and practical solutions were proposed.
Father Louqa Awad stressed the importance of joint efforts to build a Syria that accommodates everyone, while lawyer Malak affirmed that transitional justice is the basis of any true reconciliation.
Recommendations and Future Steps
The seminar concluded with recommendations calling for:
- Activating the role of an independent judiciary.
- Launching community initiatives for reconciliation.
- Developing awareness programs on transitional justice.
- Opening sustainable dialogue platforms.
- Encouraging media and institutions to promote a discourse of tolerance.
Trainer Abdul Fattah Sheikh Omar emphasized the importance of expanding the dialogue to include all segments of society. This seminar reaffirms “Steps Syria” commitment to supporting transitional justice and peacebuilding, to forge shared visions for a more just and tolerant future in Syria.
