Steps Syria Enhances Good Governance for Local Councils in Idlib

Ariha – Idlib Countryside | Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation

As part of its efforts to promote good governance and build local capacities, the Steps Syria for Community Development Foundation organized a specialized training in Ariha, Idlib countryside, from February 22 to 25, 2025. The training targeted 16 members from eight local councils in the Jabal Zawiya and Ariha areas, supervised by trainer Khidr Al-Khidr.

Training Objectives and Themes

The training aimed to enable heads and members of local councils to understand and apply the principles of good governance to enhance administrative efficiency and promote transparency and accountability. The themes included defining governance, levels of administration, governance mechanisms, and cybersecurity risks.

The program featured interactive workshops to analyze administrative structures and design new models that enhance the role of women. The training also reviewed successful local experiences in productive projects, aiming for a shift from a relief role to a developmental one.

Women’s Representation and Future Recommendations

Discussions revealed weak representation of women in most local councils, which necessitated emphasizing the need to prepare training programs to empower women administratively and politically and ensure their effective representation.

Surveys showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge level, with the understanding rate increasing from 49.34% to 91.25%. Participants concluded with recommendations and the launch of productive projects to achieve financial independence for the councils.
